9-year old Sam Coates of Berlin and Ocean City Elementary School shot his first deer Saturday during Maryland Youth Day. His trophy is a 165 pound buck with a nice 8-point rack. He was hunting with his father, Tom Coates, on his Grandparents' farm in lower Wicomico County.
Sam was noted as saying, "This was the start of one of the best days of my life!" because later that morning he scored a touchdown in his Youth Football game and then helped his Grandfather make pork sausage and venison steaks at an annual family gathering at the farm. His brother, Charlie, 6, won a skeet competition and Lizzie, his 3-year-old sister, stole 29 hearts. A best day all around.
